Chapter Six ~ The Wrong Choice

Turn with me in your Bibles to Ruth 1:1-2. We learn many important things:

  1. The people of Israel had ___________________, thus they were still be
    governed by ___________________ .
    ● ___________________________________________
  2. There was an ___________________ in the land.
    ● ____________________________________________
  3. We are introduced to Elimelech and his family.
    ● Elimelech means ___________________ .
    ● Naomi means ____________________________.
    ● Mahlon means ___________________ .
    ● Chilion means ___________________ .
  4. Elimelech and his family were from ___________________ (meaning “House
of Bread”), located in the land of ___________________ (meaning “Praise”).
    ● ____________________________________________

NOTE: Did you know there were TWO Bethlehems in Israel?

Elimelech was a ___________________ in Bethlehem. During the famine, he
and his family went to ___________________ in Moab.
● Moab means ___________________ .
● ____________________________________________

The inhabitants of Moab were called ___________________ . They were
descendants of ___________________ .

(Reference Genesis 19:37)

The Moabites epitomized everything that the Israelites were supposed to
___________________ . Because of their pagan practices, and the fact that they
also contributed to the downfall and oppression of the Israelites, they were a people ___________________ .

While the Israelites were again in a period of turmoil and punishment, Elimelech chose to ___________________ his family and leave ___________________ . He chose to leave ___________________ . He chose to leave
___________________ . He chose to leave ___________________ .

Think about it: This family, who were inhabitants of a land called ___________________ (Ephrath), left the ___________________ (Bethlehem) in the
___________________ (Judah) to go ___________________ (Moab).11

Read Ruth 1:3-4.

What happened next? Naomi’s sons took for themselves ___________________
as ___________________ .

(Reference Deuteronomy 23:3)

Had Naomi given up on God?

Ruth (meaning ___________________ ), she married the firstborn, Mahlon.
Orpah (meaning ___________________ ), she married the second born, Chilion.
They lived in Moab for ___________________ years.

Read Ruth 1:5

Read Ruth 1:6
“ she had heard… that the Lord had visited His people in __________________.”

Let’s see what happened with Naomi. Read Ruth 1:7-14.

Interestingly enough, she told them to return home to their ___________________ homes, not the ___________________.

The father’s house is generally considered a place of ___________________ .
The mother’s house is generally considered a place where you go to
_________________________.

So what happened? Read Ruth 1:15-18.

Ruth, who was living up to her name ( ___________________ ), was determined to ___________________ , regardless of the situation and the personal cost.

Challenge #1: The Israelites

Challenge #2: The Journey Home

Read Ruth 1:19-22.

Verse 19 says that ALL the city was ___________________ and they asked,
“ ___________________ ?”

She replied (in verse 20), “ Do not call me __; call me Mara,
for the Almighty has dealt very
______ with me. ”

Psalm 147:2-3 says, “ The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the outcasts
of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds .
