Chapter Three ~ When You Don’t Have a Choice

Genesis 11:30 says, “And ____________ was ______________; she had no child.” Turn in your Bibles to Genesis 16:1. We learn three things:

1. _____________________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________________
3. _____________________________________________________________

_________________ were obtained in any number of ways:
● ____________________________________________ (Numbers 31:32-35)
● _______________________________________________ (Leviticus 25:39)
● _______________________________________________ (Leviticus 25:44)
● ________________________________________________ (Exodus 21:2-6)
● ________________________________________________ (Genesis 12:16)

After considering her circumstances and all of her options, Sarah concluded that __________________________________________________________________.

Read Genesis 16:2.

It was acceptable for a ____________ wife to present her ___________________ to her ______________ as a ___________________ in order to bear a _________ in the _____________________________.

NOTE: At this point in the story, Sarah is approximately _______ years old.

Sarah did NOT ______________________________________________________.

Read Genesis 16:3-4.

First, Hagar ___________________________ quickly.
Then, Hagar’s ___________________ toward ______________ changed.

Read Genesis 16:5-6.

What does Sarah do? ________________________________________________

In this story of Sarah and Hagar, we see _________________________________.

The end of verse 6 tells us that Sarah treated Hagar so ____________________ that Hagar decided to __________________________.

Read Genesis 16:7.

This verse tells us “the ____________ of the _________ found her…”

Hagar was headed _______________, through the ___________________, to ________________.

Read verse 8. The _____________ of the _____________ is addressing ________________ by ________________________ and ___________________.

Read Genesis 16:9-10. The angel of the Lord told Hagar to ___________________________ and ___________________________________. Then the angel made an unsolicited ___________________ to _______________.

Read Genesis 16:11-12. Imagine God saying, “I ___________ you, I _________ you, I’ve _________ you.”

Read verse 13. Hagar acknowledges the angel by a unique name: “________________________”.

Our next fact is found in Genesis 16:15. Abraham has a ____________________!

Abraham was _______ years old when he left Haran (Genesis 12:4) and came to Canaan. He was __________ years old when Ishmael was born.

Genesis 17 opens up by God ________________ to ____________________.

For the first time on record, God specifically brings ________________, by name, into the Promise. God changed her ________________ and promised to ________________ her and give Abraham a _____________ by her.

If we were to fast forward, we would land in Chapter _____ and the story of King Abimelech. Abraham told his __________________________ for the second time, and both he and Sarah landed in a heap of trouble with God.

God protected Abraham, Sarah, and His covenant in the outcome of that storyline. Sarah was _________________ and __________________.

Read Genesis 21:1-2.

Sarah ______________________ and _________________ a son… at the _______________________ time. It had been _______ years since they moved to Canaan.

Scripture tells us that Abraham was ________ years old when his heir to the Promise was born. In obedience, they called him _______________, which means _____________________.

Read Genesis 21:8.

Read Genesis 21:9-11.

Read Genesis 21:16-21.

Hagar’s story is another example that even in the darkest of times, there is ____________________________________.

Back to _____________… she lived a total of __________ years and she died in ______________________. (Genesis 23:1-2)

Whether or not your brokenness comes from your own choice or actions, or from that of another person…
God hears ______________. He sees ____________________. And He’s got a _________________________. You only have to _________ in Him.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”

If God can rescue a sinner from the wilderness, or give a 90 year old woman a baby, what can He do for you?
