Hello Sweet friends,
Today’s Reading … Psalm 81, 88, 92-93, 102-104, 1 Chronicles 7-12 and 2 Samuel 5:1-10
King David is finally king of all the tribes of Israel! In 10 short verses, God reveals many truths about what it means to be “a man after His own heart,” as well as several traits of a godly and mighty leader.
Matthew Henry’s commentary provides great insight on 2 Samuel 5:1-10:
The ground on which David is made King of all of the tribes are laid out in verses 1-3.
v1 – “We are your bone and your flesh.” As flesh and bone with the Israelites, they trust David to protect them, defend them and lead them with ferocity and passion.
v2 – “Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel in and out” David has already proven himself a trustworthy leader to his people.
“And the Lord said to you,’You shall feed my people Israel.'” This divine appointment was the greatest acknowledgment of all. The Israelites are ready to accept what God has for them. A king, not chosen based on appearance, but based on character and heart.
v3 – “So the elders of Israel came…and made a covenant with him before the Lord.” David commits himself to protect Israel as their judge in peace and captain in war. This commitment was binding because it was made, “before the Lord.”
David was an Israelite, one of God’s chosen people, anointed for this purpose and this time. God chose and raised David up to be the king of His children. He has proven himself to the Israelites as one whom can be trusted and made a commitment before the Lord to protect and lead. This moment came after much persecution and testing. David is ready. Israel is ready. They look to David to lead them as they answer God’s call to “Stop running and return to Me.”
Love to you all,
Kinsee
