Today’s Reading … Psalm 89, 96, 100-101, 105, 132, 25, 29, 33, 36, 39, 2 Samuel 6, 1 Chronicles 17-18
What does it mean to be “a man after God’s own heart?” I believe that our reading today revealed a key attribute:
“I will sing of the loving-kindness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.” Psalm 89:1
“Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.” Psalm 96:2
“Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.” Psalm 100:1
“I will sing of loving-kindness and justice,
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.” Psalm 101:1
“Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Speak of all His wonders.” Psalm 105: 2
What is on our lips? When you enter into a conversation, what do you contribute? How much thought and prayer do you give to what you say? When you leave a room, what impression have you left on the hearts of those whom you have encountered?
Why do these questions matter?
Because every time we open our mouths, our hearts spill out. More so, what comes spilling out has a lasting impact on those people that the Lord allows to be in our lives. When we are running from the Lord, our speech is evidence of insecurity, jealousy and fear. When our hearts are running towards God, our speech is evidence of His character and faithfulness in our lives. David spoke of God’s faithfulness to Him. That type of speech offered clear evidence of his heart, running towards His God. What evidence does your speech offer? What evidence does my speech offer to my family, my friends, my neighbors, strangers along the way?
Let’s make today an experiment. Before we speak, let’s pray. May our hearts run towards our faithful God and may our speech be clear evidence of that movement in our souls.
