Today’s Reading … Leviticus 26-27 and Numbers 1-6
We often focus our study of Numbers primarily on the census. While that is a key part of this book, I find it interesting that the in the Hebrew Bible the name, “Bemidhbar,” or “in the wilderness” is given based on the locale and the major events of the book.In all of these events, the writer sees the guiding hand of God sustaining, delivering and keeping covenant with his people as He prepares them for entrance into the Promised Land. In Genesis, we see humanity ruined; in Exodus, humanity restored; in Leviticus, humanity worshiping; in Numbers, humanity serving (taken form What the Bible is All About).
Our key characters in this book will be:
1. Moses, the great leader
2. Aaron, the High Priest, Moses brother
3. Miriam, Moses’ and Aaron’s sister
4. Joshua, one of the two spies who dared to believe in God and so lived to enter Canaan
5. Caleb, one of the two spies who dared to believe in God and so lived to enter Canaan
In Genesis and Exodus, the Lord has been teaching us to Trust Him and now, through Numbers, Leviticus and Deuteronomy, He will continue to pursue that relationship of mutual trust. He will faithfully call out the the Israelites in the wilderness and His children today, “Trust Me.”Let the journey continue!!
“The Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace”(Numbers 6:25-26).
