Women’s Ministry is excited to be hosting another online Bible study! Sandy Flesner (part of the Women’s Ministry Staff and gifted leader) is serving as facilitator for “Teach Us to Want” by Jen Pollock Michel. Just joining in? Week 1, Week 2, Week 3.
My parents love to watch the HGTV home renovation shows, do you know the ones I am talking about? Property Brothers (love those twins), Fixer Upper (amazing couple that makes all of us want a farmhouse) and Flip or Flop (risky ventures that always pay off). I find myself watching them when I am at my parents’ house and it’s really fun. My parents were recently inspired to do a kitchen renovation, maybe from watching these shows. What a process and journey. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve been through it yourself. I personally never have so watching theirs was interesting. There were some tense moments – when the chosen paint color was wrong, when there was no backsplash that seemed to match my mom’s style and she had to be open to new ideas, and when there was a defect on the cabinet that had to be repaired onsite. There is still one issue unresolved with the new oven; the one they initially picked out and had installed is so noisy it drives them crazy. They have had to take their dissatisfaction back to the company and fight to get a new oven. It would have been easier just to keep it and pretend they are not bothered by it. But they are persevering and waiting and the good news is it should be delivered and installed this week. It has been both a privilege and a stress-filled journey of uncertainty along the way. Guess that’s the nature of the beast called renovation. Just for fun, here’s a BEFORE and AFTER picture…
These renovation TV shows and the relatively small project my parents have undergone recently make me think of the renovation process we are going through with our desires. The process can be exciting, frustrating, challenging, uncertain. If only we could see the end result before we started; it would eliminate the worry, fear and doubt that inevitably come along the way. But we can’t envision it in a kitchen renovation and we can’t in the renovation of our hearts and minds either. This week we will face some hard material, looking at some more areas that require honesty and vulnerability. The topic of confession is never easy. I encourage you to keep “going for it” and don’t get stuck or give up. You don’t want to stop ¾ of the way into this renovation project; you want to get all the way to the end result. This renovation work is sometimes done alone and sometimes done in community. I will encourage you to always go to God first; then if He nudges you to open up to others make sure it is led by Him and your community of people are safe. (reference a great book “Safe People” by Cloud & Townsend if you are not sure what I mean by that). Think about my mom’s oven – a perfect example of doing the hard work and not taking the short road. It took a lot of trips and a lot of conversations with the vendor to get to the end result of a working oven that satisfies her need and moves her toward maximum future use of her kitchen. Don’t settle for a partial renovation – God has bigger plans that than, is more powerful than that. He has created you with desires and giftings and He wants to align them to His desires as we seek “to work and to will for His good pleasure.” (Psalm 32:8 & 9) He’s got a mission for our lives.
This week I will ask you to take a few minutes alone in prayer along the way. Ask God to humble you and continue to renovate your desires this week. Allow Him to reveal in your heart any sins, failings, or weaknesses you need to share with Him first and then perhaps someone else to receive prayer, support and healing.
HERE WE GO…
Before you watch the video, how about pondering a few questions as you get started? I invite you to share your thoughts in the comment section. This is always optional.
1. Have you ever been through a renovation project in your home? What went well? What were some obstacles or hard moments?
2. Before you start with this week’s lesson, was there anything from last week that resonated with you?
You can watch the video segment with Jen Polluck Michel on Right Now Media HERE. Have a great week working through the discussion questions in the handouts and digging into God’s Word.
Take a look at the DEEPER WALK section at the end of your handouts if your time and schedule allows. If you are reading the book, the suggested reading is chapters 6-7 this week.
